How to Choose the Right Hosiery Shade

The right hosiery colour can lengthen the leg and pull an outfit together; the wrong one fights it. A short, practical guide.

Colour is where hosiery goes from an afterthought to a finishing touch. A well-chosen shade flatters the leg and ties an outfit together; a poorly chosen one does the opposite. A few principles make it easy.

Nudes: match your skin, not a label

For an invisible, leg-lengthening effect, choose a nude roughly one shade deeper than your own skin tone, and pay attention to undertone — cool, warm, or neutral. The goal is for the hosiery to read as skin, not as a visible layer. Brand names like "nude" or "beige" mean little; the only real test is holding it against your leg.

Black: the reliable default

Opaque black is the hardest-working shade in any drawer. It is slimming, versatile, and pairs with almost everything. For a softer look, a sheer black in a lower denier reads dressier; for warmth and a graphic edge, go opaque.

Colours and the rest of your outfit

  • Match hosiery to your shoes or hem to make the leg look longer.
  • For coloured tights, echo a colour already in your outfit rather than introducing a brand-new one.
  • Grey and deep berry tones are flattering, less expected alternatives to black.
  • Matte finishes read more formal; subtle sheen reads more glamorous.

When in doubt, build from two anchors — a flattering nude and a good opaque black — and add colours only once those are covered. Those two will carry the vast majority of occasions.
