The Best Hosiery for Winter: How to Stay Warm in Tights

Warm tights are about more than a high denier. Here is how fibre, lining, and layering keep your legs comfortable through winter.

Hosiery is a genuinely practical winter layer — a good pair adds warmth under trousers as easily as under a dress. The trick is knowing which features actually trap heat, rather than assuming a high number on the package is the whole story.

Start with denier, but do not stop there

For cold days, look at 80 denier and up; 100–120 denier opaques are a reliable everyday winter weight, and 150+ verge on a knitted tight. But denier only measures yarn thickness. Two 100 denier pairs can feel very different depending on fibre and construction, so read past the number.

The features that trap heat

  • Fleece-lined or "thermal" tights have a brushed inner surface that traps a layer of warm air — the warmest option by far.
  • Wool and cotton blends insulate better than pure nylon and feel cosier against the skin.
  • A higher elastane content holds the fabric close, which reduces cold air pockets.
  • Footed styles keep toes warm; footless or capri styles are better layered under boots and trousers.

Layer intelligently

You can wear a sheer or microfibre pair under an opaque pair for extra warmth without bulk, or slip tights under trousers on the coldest days. Darker colours also read as warmer and hide the slight sheen that thick tights can have. Build a small winter rotation — one thermal, one wool-blend opaque, one everyday 100 denier — and most of the season is covered.
