Pantyhose & Tights Size Guide: How to Find Your Perfect Fit
Sagging gussets and rolling waistbands are almost always a sizing problem. Here is how to get the fit right the first time.
More hosiery complaints come down to size than to quality. Tights that are too small ladder and feel restrictive; tights that are too big sag at the crotch and roll at the waist. Getting the size right is the single biggest upgrade most people can make — and it costs nothing.
How hosiery sizing works
Unlike clothing, tights are usually sized on two measurements together: height and weight. That is because the fabric has to stretch along the whole leg and body, so both your length and your girth matter. Most brands print a grid — height up one side, weight along the other — and you find the box where the two meet. When you land on a boundary between two sizes, size up: a little slack is far more comfortable than a knit stretched to its limit.
Signs your size is wrong
- The gusset hangs low between the thighs — the pair is too long or too big; size down or choose a petite cut.
- The waistband rolls or digs in — too small in the body; size up or look for a comfort/control-top waistband.
- The toes feel tight or the ankles bag — a length mismatch; check the height band on the chart.
- Ladders appear quickly at stress points — the knit is over-stretched; you likely need the next size up.
Petite, tall, and plus sizes
If you are at the edges of a standard chart, look for brands that cut specifically for your proportions. Petite ranges shorten the leg and body so the gusset sits where it should; tall ranges add length so you are not fighting a waistband that wants to sit under your bust; and dedicated plus ranges add width and a deeper, more supportive waistband rather than just scaling a smaller pattern. The right cut feels invisible — which is exactly the point.
