Stockings & Suspenders: A Beginner’s Guide to Garter Belts
A suspender belt looks more complicated than it is. Here is how the parts fit together and how to wear them comfortably.
Stockings held up by a suspender belt — a garter belt, in American English — are the original way to wear hosiery, and still the most reliable. If the idea seems fiddly, it is far simpler than it looks once you understand the handful of parts involved.
The parts, briefly
- The belt: sits around the waist or hips and anchors everything.
- The straps: adjustable elastic that hangs down the leg.
- The clips: a button-and-loop fastening at the end of each strap that grips the stocking top.
- The welt: the reinforced band at the top of the stocking that the clip attaches to.
Four straps or six?
Four-strap belts (two per leg) are the classic, with a strap at the front and back of each thigh. Six-strap belts add one on the outer thigh, which keeps the stocking tops straighter and holds more securely — worth it if you find four straps let the fronts sag. Beginners are usually happiest starting with a comfortable six-strap belt.
Comfort tips that make a difference
- Put your knickers on over the suspender belt, not under it, so you can use the bathroom without unclipping.
- Attach the clip to the welt, not the sheer leg, and adjust the straps so the stockings are supported but not pulled tight.
- Match the belt size to where you want it to sit — higher on the waist for a vintage look, lower on the hips for comfort.
Once the mechanics click, a suspender belt becomes second nature — and it opens the door to the enormous world of classic seamed and fully fashioned stockings that hold-ups simply cannot replace.
